My Medication
By Dennis Brooks
Since I have been suffering with this condition, ankylosing Spondylitis, my consultant has tried a wide range of different drugs to try and ease my condition. I started on 10mg methotrexate per week, that was then increased to 20, I was also taking folic acid to counteract some of the potential side effects. I was then started on Prednisolone, a steroid, building up to 20mg per day, that has since been reduced and I am now on 5mg per day long term. I was then started on sulsalphasene at 200mg twice a day, throughout this time I have also been taking ibuprofen for pain relief. Despite all these regular tablets and a course of steroid infusions I am still in pain most of the time, the actual level varies but it is always there. When I go to see him again in a few weeks I expect he will change my drugs again, on the last visit he was talking about trying the methotrexate by injection to see if that works any better, if that fails there is only one set of drugs left to try, these are anti-TNF drugs, they are relatively new and still a bit controversial. I will keep you updated about my progress. |
