My medical condition By Dennis Brooks I am suffering from a medical condition called, Ankylosing Spondylitis, it is a form of arthritis. The condition causes the spine to go rigid by boney growths joining the bones together. It is far more common in men than in women and usually starts in their mid twenties. I was suffering with back pain for several years, this was thought to be caused by the recurrence of an injury I received in my early twenties. I was treated for back pain, but my back was gradually getting more and more stiff, the doctors that were treating me put it down to Spondylosis that is caused by general wear and tear of the joints. When I started getting pain and swelling in my wrists and knees my GP referred me to a rheumatologist who immediately recognised my symptoms, he explained that this condition is extremely difficult to diagnose in its early stages, and is often misdiagnosed as mine had been. If you know anybody that is suffering from a stiff back it could be the start of this condition so it needs to be looked at by a specialist
