Do you back up your data?
By Dennis Brooks
I ask that question, because I am amazed how many people do not bother, they tend to think that only companies need to do backups, that is not so, Everybody should do them. Your computer is a useful tool that you use to store information, but if anything should ever happen i.e. a major hard disk failure, you could lose all the information you may have spent years building up. All your photos, music, documents, address book, or anything else you have stored could be lost. The programs themselves are easy to restore, all you need to do is just run the install disk again and they are back, but the information you have personally stored that you have spent time creating could be lost. After accidental deletion of files, a hard disk failure or a virus infection that destroys your hard disk, data can often be restored, but that may cost a lot of money, or you need to find a program to restore it and learn how to use it, if you have all your data backed up, all you need to do is restore the backup and you have it there. There are many ways to back up your data, the cheapest is to simply copy it to another disk, this however can be time consuming, and anything in a program that is running will not be copied. If you are a Windows user, there is a backup program built into Windows, it is extremely basic, and if you just want to restore a few files, you have to restore the entire backup to a different location, select the files you want to restore, copy them back to the original location and then delete the rest of the restore. There is a nice little tool available from Microsoft that only works with the latest versions of XP or Vista, called Synctoy, this can be used to backup your data to another disk, I would recommend a USB external Hard drive or a flash drive, the first time you run it it will copy all the files you select, but after that it will check the files that have changed and just copy those. Other than those mentioned, there are literally hundreds of free and paid for backup programs available, you would need to check what is available for your operating system and assess which was best suited to your needs. Some companies offer free limited off site backup facilities where you can upload your backup through the internet onto their servers, if you need more space to store them you can pay for it. The main advantage of these is that is that if, God forbid, your property is totally destroyed your data will still be accessible. However you do them backups should be a major part of your regular routine, if you are a domestic user once weekly is probably OK, but if you use your computer for any type of business you should run them more frequently as your files are likely to change more often |
